Composer’s notes

About the piece.

Conductor composer David Coleman celebrates the individual instruments in the ensemble of the brass section of the classical orchestra.

The players discover new sounds, which coalesce then fracture and reform with a fresh image, like the visual patterns of a Kaleidoscope. The musical language of these instruments is stretched and then given new dimensions. The heavy brass are given star treatment.

A simple old French folk melody forms the heart of this piece.

The spectacular ending explodes in a unique spectrum of the sound of brass.

Kaleidoscope was inspired and dedicated to the brass section of the Hungarian State Opera and they are the interpreters in this recording.

A modern classical piece in structure and language, but accessible to everyone.
