Manuel Legris was born in Paris on 10 October 1964. He entered the Paris Opera Ballet School in 1976 and the company’s corps in 1980. On 11 July 1986, at 21, Rudolf Nureyev named him étoile after he danced Jean de Brienne in Raymonda at the Metropolitan Opera, skipping the rank of premier danseur. He left the Paris Opera stage on 15 May 2009.

He directed the Vienna State Ballet from 2010 to 2020 and was appointed artistic director of the La Scala Theatre Ballet in December 2020. As Ballet Director there he instituted the seasonal Balletto Gala per Carla Fracci; David Coleman conducted the 2024 gala on this site.
