Gyula Harangozó Jr. trained at the Hungarian State Ballet Institute and the Moscow State Academy of Choreography, graduating in 1976. He joined the Hungarian State Opera that year, became a soloist in 1978, and from 1981 to 1991 was a principal at the Vienna State Opera, also guesting in Munich.
He directed the Hungarian National Ballet from 1996 to 2005 and later the Vienna State Opera and Volksoper ballet companies. As a choreographer he has staged Don Quixote, Swan Lake, Coppélia and Snow White. He received the Kossuth Prize in 2002. Coppélia at the Hungarian State Opera, billed with David Coleman, uses his choreography.
