George Balanchine was born Georgi Balanchivadze in St Petersburg in 1904. Trained in Imperial Russian ballet, he joined Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, created Apollo in 1928, and in 1933 went to the United States at Lincoln Kirstein’s invitation.
He co-founded New York City Ballet and was its artistic director for more than 35 years, shaping neoclassical ballet in plotless works to classical and modern scores. Divertimento No. 15, billed in Living Legacies, is part of that repertory. He died in 1983.
